A Blast From The Past
On New Years Eve it suddenly hit me that I will turn 60 this year. To us Baby Boomers this is quite a shock. We thought that we would be young, nimble and important forever. We thought that the world was meant to revolve around us and that we were "The Generation of all Generations" Well we are finding out that we are still the biggest generations( and yes that includes our waistlines) but our only real impact at this point is our forthcoming strain on Social Security. When we get together the conversation usually comes around to the parts of our bodies that either do not work anymore are at least not working as well. All the pro athletes look like they could be our grandchildren and when we see that really hot young woman she is nice to us because we remind her of their grandfather. Well what we up in youthful vigor we make up in knowledge of life and maturity.
What started all this was I was standing in the Narthax of our church after service this morning and was approached by one of my high school classmates. She was one of the popular girls and many thought she was really something. Now we talk about her grandchildren. Anyway she told me she had been at a 60th. birthday party last night for one of our classmates( there is one of those 60 numbers again) She saw one of the guys that I was friends with in grade school and high school. Bill and I haven't seen each other since our 10th. high school reunion so by we have gone out and lived our lives. It turns out he is now living about only 1 mile from me. Sandy is getting me his phone number. It would be good to have a cup of coffee with him. We have no relationship at this point except "the past" but it would be good to see him and see what his life has been like. I would here of Bill once in a while over the years from mutual friends but he was like a ghost that exsisted only on the edge of my knowledge and existantce. It would be nice to bring him into focus a little more. It is said that 60 is the new 40. Well I hope that is true because it seems to me that I have a lot more living to do and a lot more things to see. Well so much for now.
